India launched its first home-built navy supply ship, Surya, which refuels warships at sea. Five are planned, but deliveries start only in mid-2027, so the navy must manage with old tankers until then.

Who constructed the ship?

Surya was built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), the state-run yard in Visakhapatnam. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched the hull there on Tuesday, marking the end of main construction. The design is Indian too, by Smart Engineering & Design Solutions, a private firm near Kochi, after early foreign design partners were dropped. HSL is building all five fleet support ships.

What is the conventional role of a fleet support ship?

A fleet support ship is a floating logistics hub. Its conventional role is to carry fuel, water, ammunition, food and stores, and transfer them to warships at sea, alongside, from the stern or by helicopter. This lets a carrier battle group stay deployed without returning to harbour.

Is there a designated route that Surya will run on?

We could not find a reliable answer to this yet.

Is this India's first fleet support ship?

No. Surya is India's first indigenously built fleet support ship, but it is not the Navy's first replenishment vessel. The Navy already operates four fleet tankers: INS Shakti, INS Jyoti, INS Deepak and INS Aditya. Those Italian-built ships refuel warships at sea, a job Surya will also do once it enters service, expected from mid-2027.
